Here comes the postman

P1030640

This is a present I made for our oldest son. A backpack with lots of room and quite a few pockets.  On the front there is a zippered pocket and two smaller pockets beneath it. Both sides have an open pocket and inside there is a compartment for a laptop, a pocket for cell phone, a zippered pocket and two more for all the bits and bobs he always likes to carry around.

P1030639

The bag itself closes with a zipper. This is the easiest way of closing a bag, and I know that if there wasn’t a zipper, the bag wouldn’t be closed at all; it’s so much work to close buttons or straps!

P1030630

The top can be used as a roll-top with the straps or just left as it is, to have
more room for all his stuff.

P1030633

To carry the bag I made two soft but sturdy straps which can be adjusted.
All around a faux leather piping gives the bag a more sturdy look.

The boy was happy with his bag; I’m ambivalent about it. The bag itself looks great, but if I had to make it again, I think I would use a different material for the straps. They are now made with a cotton band, but it is a bit too fragile for this bag. So next time I think I would choose (faux) leather or something like that.

Covering notebooks

 P1030617

Earlier this year I already made a bookcover like this, and I because all my men use these notebooks, I wanted to make each one of them a personalised book.

It starts with finding a quote which is perfect and not too long. Then the fun starts. Using my embroidery software, I start with the quote as it is, and then play with fonts, lettersizes and layout until I’m satisfied.

The last step of designing is to add something extra, in this case a swirl and a banner. Then it should look like this.

Dream Big

After making all three quotes into designs, they were embroidered on felt and then the covers were glued on to the books.

No care needed

The last couple of weeks have been quite frantic. Today we’re going to celebrate our evening with Sinterklaas and I wanted to make as many gifts as possible myself. And even though I started a couple of months ago, it was as always a race against time to finish it all. And of course I thought just this week of the most complicated gift of them all. I’m not going to tell and show all of them, and certainly not all at once.

Today I want to start with these little cuties.

P1030580

Three little knitted cacti made for J. He has moved out of our home last year and he loves to make his room cozy and homey. So he bought himself some plants. And you probably can guess what happened….. they didn’t live that long.
So he tried a cactus. Didn’t give it too much care, but some of his (female) friends gave it a bit of water when they visited. So the cactus lasted longer, but in the end, it didn’t survive either.

So as a kind of a joke, I made him these three little ones. The pattern is by Drops/Garnstudio, and the yarn used is Stylecraft Special DK.

Hopefully these will last a bit longer!

Chaos on my table

P1030565

Usually I’m working on one or two projects at the same time. This time however, I’m really not counting anymore.  Maybe it is a lack of focus, or, if I’m kind to myself I would say it’s more a excess of creativity.

For the shop I’m making a few more Rose Scarves, So that is why the tray above is filled with these little flowers; it’s  a bit of an assembly line that I’ve set up.

But there’s a lot more on the needles.

P1030569

December is on its way, so a lot of gifts have to be made. This is actually kind of alittle joke for one of my family members; I’ll show the finished items after they have been given away.

P1030566

And since a couple of months I’ve been working on a new cardigan. I’m not sure what I was thinking to make a straight black cardigan; this is so boring, that it seems to take forever.

On the side, there are these letters:

P1030571

The idea of another Scrabble Pillow but even though I’ve made the tiles already, I’m not too sure about the words I want on the pillow. So for now it is put aside.

Something else which is put aside for now is the idea of making a cover for the sewing machine. My workspace is in the living room, and often the machine is standing on the table. Not a very nice sight, so I thought of making a cover for it. The idea is to use patterns and designs which have a direct relation to the machine. So I think I’m going to make a piece with a lot of the stitches which the machine can make, an embroidered piece, and  so on.

The design is from Embroidery Library, but I’ve changed almost all colors.

While making this post, I realize these are not the only wip’s. Fabric is waiting to be turned into blouses; there is a pile of fabric I bought to make special gifts for December; ……Maybe I need a to-do-list to make sure everything will turn out right.

Cushions for the kitchen

P1030536

About 3½ years ago I made a pair of cushions for the kitchen bench. But I wasn’t really smart, because I made them with beautiful cotton whicht was meant to be used for clothes. So after sitting on these practically every day, you can imaging how they are looking now. Time for new ones.

This time I bought fabric which is much sturdier so hopefully they will last a bit longer.

First I finished off the edges with the serger. This fabric is woven so it ravels terribly.

P1030537

Next step was to cover cord to make a piping. I cut strips of 1.5 inch (4 cm) and stitched the fabric folded over the cord. I used a zipper foot to stitch as closely to the cord as possible.

P1030540

Then everything was ready to put the covers together.

I made a blind zipper on the back.

The cushions are finished and I’m very happy with them. But the bench does need something extra. So I guess one of my next projects will be to make matching pillows.

What to say…..

It has been such a long time that I think it is better to describe my summer with a couple of pictures instead of a long, boring text.

Vakantie collage

A little idea of our travels this summer. We’’ve been to France, Spain and a weekend to the lovely city of Mechelen in Belgium.

And of course; my hands have been busy too.

Zelfgemaakt collage

I hope it won’’t take this long before my next post. I’’ve lot of ideas and quite some time on my hands, so it should be possible to get at least a few of them started.  For now, I just leave you with this funny picture I made just around the corner; it is an abandoned bike I pass every day, and I just love watching it. It is almost as if the longer it stands there, the more beautiful it gets.

For a boy with a hammer

P1030308

Time flies; not only has it been a long time since the last post on this little blog, but it seems such a short time ago that my sons were born. And now I made this notebook for one of them, for quit a special occasion. As of this week, he will be the chairman of his tennis club. Barely 19 years old, he takes on this responsibility.  He’s looking forward to this a lot and because this mom uses every reason possible to give presents, I made him this.

Since a couple of months I’m the proud owner of new embroidery software.

P1030312

Absolutely awesome, but it has so many features and possibilities, it needs a lot of study and practise to use it well. So that is exactly what I did for this cover. I found this phrase which I wanted to use and started playing with the words. Different fonts and sizes until I was satisfied, added a hammer and of course a couple of tennis rackets. Et voila:

P1030307

A book, some bookbinding glue and the embroidered fabric, a little magic and the book was covered.
